The First Gospel Sermon

David M. Bonner

Acts chapter 2 tells the story of the first gospel sermon preached after the resurrection of Christ. The four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) close with the story of Jesus having been raised from the dead (Mt.28:6; Mk.16:6). Just a few days later the apostle Peter preached the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ (Acts 2:23). When those who heard this sermon came to believe in Jesus, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, WHAT SHALL WE DO? Acts 2:37. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ FOR the REMISSION OF SINS Acts 2:38. Peter told them WHAT TO DO to be saved. What was the result of this sermon? Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Acts 2:41.

We must BELIEVE in Jesus and DO what Peter told them to do to be saved. REPENT and BE BAPTIZED FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS. WHEN we do this, the Lord ADDS us to His church, Acts 2:47. Then as a child of God and one in the Lords church (Mt.16:18), we need to serve God every day by living right. You also need to be a part of a local church that teaches and stands for the TRUTH. Be faithful then in assembling for exhortation (Heb.10:25), taking the Lords supper every Sunday (Acts 20:7), giving to the cause of Christ (1Cor.16:2), singing (Eph.5:19), praying (1Cor.14:15-16), and GROWING spiritually (1Pet.2:2). You’ll have the greatest happiness found, knowing you are in the proper relationship with DEITY.
