The “Majority” Missing the “Minority”

Richard Thetford

Most individuals want to be included with the "majority" in various issues of life. Sometimes that is alright but the important thing should be that we are doing what we do because we know it's right, not because the "majority" is doing it. As far as being a Christian, a child of God is concerned, being in the "minority" is good. Since there are not very many Christians (those truly seeking to obey God's commands) then we can stand proud knowing that we are in the "minority" seeking to serve God no matter what the "majority" thinks.

In the days of Noah thousands of people laughed and mocked Noah as he spent many years building the ark because he had faith that God would deliver on His promise that the earth would be destroyed by water. Only he and his family were saved. Peter wrote: "who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water” (1 Peter 3:20). Don't you know that the "majority" of Noah's day missed being among the "minority" when the flood waters started rising and they could see that Noah and his family were saved by the water while the "majority" perished because of lack of faith. What about Sodom and Gomorrah? In Genesis 19:20f we can read where only Lot and his two daughters escaped when God totally destroyed that city! The "majority" perished, while just a "minority" (3) were saved. Again don't you know that the "majority" missed being among the "minority"? We are told by Jesus Himself that only a few will enter into heaven. “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matthew 7:13-14). Again, the "majority" will miss being among the "minority" on judgment day.

We can conclude the following: 1) That the "majority" are on the wrong side of God. 2) That weakness in numbers does not of necessity involve danger or defects (Judges 7:7; 1 Corinthians 1:27; 2 Corinthians 12:10). 3) That God does not judge by external appearances. 4) That God will keep his promise that if we remain faithful to Him until death, then we will be part of that "minority" that will get to enter into heaven (Revelation 2:10). If you feel that you're in the "minority" as far as being a Christian is concerned - then count your blessings!
